GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Fishing in the Tarpon Springs area is very good now, reports captain David Graham. Graham is still catching snook on the Anclote and Caladesi beaches using small to medium white bait. On the inside, trout, mackerel, blue fish, grass grouper and snapper are plentiful over the grass flats. Redfish have been biting well on the oyster bars. Fresh-cut ballyhoo has been the best bait.
Allan and Zach Higbee fishing in the Terra Ceia area with captain Terry Russo caught a 41-inch snook and numerous redfish between 31 and 40 inches. Russo says the big reds are in town for their fall spawn.
Weedon Island has been producing big redfish for captain Chuck Rodgers and his clients. Incoming tide has been the best and most of the reds are over the slot limit. Sitting in a likely spot and chumming the reds to the boat with fresh-cut bait has been the best recipe for action.
Redfish and snook have been biting well in the daytime under the docks with deep water. Try a live white bait or shrimp with just enough weight to keep it on the bottom near the pilings.
Offshore grouper should start migrating closer to shore. Now is the time to try your hotspots in 60 to 80 feet of water.
Captain Bill Miller hosts 'Hooked on Fishing' on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
