Mourinho Leaves Chelsea Post
LONDON - Jose Mourinho quit as manager of Chelsea on Wednesday, one day after the team was held to a 1-1 tie by Rosenborg in its European Champions League opener. Chelsea (3-1-2) is fifth in the English Premier League and plays at Manchester United on Sunday.
'Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today by mutual consent,' the English team said early Thursday on its Web site.
Mourinho led the club to Premier League titles in 2005 and '06, and he won the Football Association Cup and the League Cup during his tenure. But twice losing in the semifinals of the Champions League put him at odds with billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.
A Goal In The Name Of Sportsmanship
LONDON - Leicester deliberately allowed Nottingham Forest to score a goal in a League Cup match replayed because a player collapsed with a heart failure during the original game. Leicester players stood aside to let Forest goalkeeper Paul Smith walk up the field with the ball and kick it into an open net after 23 seconds of Tuesday night's second-round game.
Gary Megson, Leicester's manager, said the gesture was in reaction to Nottingham leading 1-0 in the initial match Aug. 28, abandoned at halftime after Leicester's Clive Clarke collapsed in the dressing room. Clarke is still recovering.
'We felt it was morally right for us to come here and start 1-0 behind in reacting to what went on three weeks ago,' Megson said.
Leicester won Tuesday's game 3-2.
