TAMPA -- Last season, the Bradenton Christian volleyball team swept Bayshore Christian, defeating the Faith Warriors during the regular season and in the Class A region final.
Bayshore used the memory of those losses as motivation Thursday, sweeping the Panthers in three games, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-16.
"The girls are moving toward playing as a unified team and tonight we moved closer to that," said Bayshore coach Melanie Humenansky.
Senior Jannica Mollett led the Faith Warriors (5-2) with 13 kills while junior Sami Stokes added nine. Junior libero Sara Lucia finished with 16 digs, one of which included a diving, one-handed dig that sailed over the net for a point.
"I was her second grade teacher," Humenansky said of Lucia. "She's coming into her own. She never gives up on the ball."
Senior setter Ashlea Ballangee recorded 33 assists while freshman Gabrielle Fernandez had six kills off eight hits. Sophomore middle hitter Velencia King had five blocks, two solo and three assisted.
During their pregame warm ups, Bayshore players sported T-shirts which read "Remember the name." Humenansky said this year's team, although young, is striving to leave a legacy.
"They want people to remember them," she said.
Humenansky said her team made a statement against Bradenton, which lost in the 1A state semifinals last year.
"Just to say to [Bradenton] we didn't forget," she said.
