CLEARWATER – In a wreck in which the rising sun may have been a factor, two cars ran a red light this morning, and one of them struck a school bus transporting children to St. Cecilia Interparochial Catholic School, officials said.

Eighteen children were on the bus in the 7:44 a.m. wreck, and after the accident they walked to the school, which was nearby, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman.

Two students later reported minor injuries, and their parents were contacted, she said.

The wreck occurred after Charles Anderson, 30, of Largo, ran a red light at Hillcrest Avenue and Court Street, and his car was struck by the school bus, which had a green light, Daly-Watts said.

A second car, driven by Maria R. Portes, 56, of Clearwater, also ran the red light and collided with Anderson's car, Daly-Watts said.

Both Portes and Anderson were cited for running a red light, Daly-Watts said. In addition, Anderson was charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and having no car insurance, Daly-Watts said.
