TAMPA - The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid Baby's Bliss Gripe Water after a parasite was found in the product.
About 17,600 bottles of the herbal supplement aimed to ease baby gas and stomach aches have been linked through lab analysis to the illness of a 6-week-old infant in Minnesota.
The product the FDA recommends parents remove is the MOM Enterprises Inc. Baby's Bliss Gripe Water, apple flavor, with a code of 26952V and expiration date of October 2008 (shown as "10/08" on the label). It was distributed nationwide between November 2006 and this month in four-ounce plastic bottles.
The FDA confirmed through laboratory analysis the presence of the parasite cryptosporidium after investigating the illness of the Minnesota infant. Cryptosporidium is a parasite that can cause intestinal infections. Symptoms usually appear within two to 10 days after infection.
Most healthy people will recover without treatment, but infants, children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are susceptible to dehydration and possible life-threatening illness.
Parents whose children have recently consumed Baby's Bliss Gripe Water, apple flavor, and have these symptoms should get immediate medical assistance.
