Nightclub Wrestling Show To Throw SPCA A Bone

NEW PORT RICHEY - Wrestling for Whiskers, an event set for Tuesday at Bourbon Street Nightclub in New Port Richey, will offer a wrestling show, dressed up dogs and cookout-style food - and it's all for the sake of the animals.

'One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will benefit the West Pasco SPCA,' said Amy Scott, a representative of event co-host Save Our Sandbar. This New Port Richey-based organization, devoted to boating advocacy, also hosts fundraisers for nonprofit organizations.

Scott credits Kathy St. Martin, vice president of Save Our Sandbar, with coming up with the Wrestling for Whiskers idea. It was St. Martin who first approached Ralph Siero, owner of Bourbon Street, with the concept for the event.

'Ralph is going to host shows by Florida Championship Wrestling at his club,' said Scott. 'For the first show, Kathy suggested adding something special. She suggested that the proceeds of the show benefit SPCA Suncoast.'

Aside from the wrestling show presented by Florida Championship Wrestling, the WWE Developmental League that has agreed to donate all of the proceeds to the SPCA, the benefit will feature a Dashing Doggie costume contest, a cookout buffet for $5 per person, 50/50 drawings and an auction.

'Dress your pet in their furry finest for fun and prizes,' organizers said in a statement. 'Pets will be available for adoption and we'll have a pet food drive for SPCA...so please bring bagged pet food of any kind.'

Scott said she thinks this fundraiser represents a positive effort on behalf of athletes to help animals. She hopes it will be the first of many.

'We hope to make SPCA night a regular event,' she said. 'Who can resist a puppy?'

Wrestling For Whiskers will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the club, 4331 U.S. 19. Admission is $7 for those older than 12; children younger than 12 get in free with a paying adult.
