ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Mike Hart ran for 153 yards on a career-high 44 carries and scored early in the fourth quarter, leading Michigan to a 14-9 win against No. 10 Penn State on Saturday.
The Wolverines (2-2, 1-0 Big Ten) have climbed back to .500 and pumped life back into a season that looked dead after two weeks.
The Wolverines were the fifth-ranked team in the country when they were stunned by Appalachian State in the opener. The next week, they were blown out of the Big House by Oregon.
But Michigan always seems to get well against Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions (3-1, 0-1). Penn State has lost nine straight games to Michigan, the longest winning streak by one team against the famed coach by more than double the second-best run against him.
MICHIGAN STATE 31, NOTRE DAME 14: Notre Dame hit new depths, becoming the first team in the school's 119-season history to lose its first four games.
Brian Hoyer threw four touchdown passes and Javon Ringer rushed for 144 yards to lead visiting Michigan State (4-0) to an easy victory.
The Irish have now lost six straight, including the final two games of last season, the second-longest losing streak in school history.
OHIO STATE 58, NORTHWESTERN 7: Todd Boeckman tossed three touchdown passes to Brian Robiskie in the first half to lead No. 8 Ohio State past visiting Northwestern.
Just about everything went wrong for the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) in the first half. The Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0) could've had their starters leave at halftime for some tailgating outside the Horseshoe. They've won 15 straight at home.
ILLINOIS 27, INDIANA 14: Rashard Mendenhall ran for a career-high 214 yards and one touchdown, scored on a reception and the Illinois (3-1, 1-0) defense forced four turnovers and blocked a punt in a victory against host Indiana (3-1, 0-1).
Big 12
OKLAHOMA STATE 49, TEXAS TECH 45: Tight end Brandon Pettigrew caught a 55-yard TD pass with 1:37 remaining to give host Oklahoma State (2-2, 1-0) a win against Texas Tech (3-1, 0-1) despite a career-best 646 yards passing from Red Raiders quarterback Graham Harrell.
Texas Tech had a final chance to win but Jeremy Crabtree, the nation's leader in receptions and touchdown catches, let a 15-yard pass from Harrell bounce off his hands in the end zone after Oklahoma State cornerback Ricky Price flashed in front of him with 11 seconds remaining.
Oklahoma State had three rushers surpass 100 yards for the first time in school history. Dantrell Savage ran for 130 yards on 25 carries, quarterback Zac Robinson picked up 116 on 13 rushes and Kendall Hunter ran 14 times for 113 yards. The Cowboys ended up with 366 yards on the ground.
Harrell completed 46 of 67 passes with five touchdowns as Tech had 718 yards of total offense - the most ever allowed by the Cowboys.
TEXAS 58, RICE 14: Colt McCoy passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 7 Texas (4-0) to an easy win against visiting Rice (0-4).
Limas Sweed caught five passes for 139 yards with touchdowns of 52 and 24 yards as the Longhorns pounded out any lingering frustrations after three close wins.
NEBRASKA 41, BALL STATE 40: Sam Keller's third touchdown pass finally put Nebraska in the lead with 3:13 left in the game, and the 24th-ranked Cornhuskers (3-1) survived an upset bid by visiting Ball State (2-2).
MISSOURI 38, ILLINOIS STATE 17: Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes and No. 25 Missouri (4-0) had 581 yards of total offense in beating visiting Illinois State (2-2).
COLORADO 42, MIAMI (OHIO) 0: Cody Hawkins threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as host Colorado (2-2) broke a two-game skid in beating Miami of Ohio (1-3).
BAYLOR 34, BUFFALO 21: Blake Szymanski passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to help Baylor (3-1) beat host Buffalo (1-3).
TOLEDO 36, IOWA STATE 35: Linebacker Greg Hay recovered a botched punt in the end zone late in the fourth quarter, giving Toledo (1-3) the win vs. visiting Iowa State (1-3).
Pac-10
CALIFORNIA 45, ARIZONA 27: Justin Forsett rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 6 California (4-0, 1-0) used a 28-point first quarter to beat visiting Arizona (1-3, 0-1).
