TAMPA - A free safety course will soon be required for any child younger than 17 who wants online access in Hillsborough County libraries.
Children and teens will have to take the NetSmartz course that county officials began using in June. The program started as voluntary, but will become mandatory Oct. 1.
It was developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to teach children ages 5 and older to avoid the dangers of online sexual predators.
Users who complete the program receive a free children's admission to Lowry Park Zoo, The Florida Aquarium and the Museum of Science & Industry.
Since its inception, more than 2,800 children and teens have taken the course, said library spokesman Braulio Colón.
The course takes about 20 minutes to complete.
