Meet Ron Paul
Nine men are competing in the presidential primaries for the Republican Party nomination. Four enjoy nationwide name recognition. Four more have so-called 'second-tier' status.
The ninth candidate is virtually unknown to the American voter thanks to the political equivalent of the Mafia code of 'omerta' (silence) in which all candidates, Republican and Democrat, have sworn to never speak the name of that ninth candidate. They are aided and abetted in this despicable effort by their assorted shills, mouthpieces and propagandists in TV, print and talk radio media.
Permit me to introduce that ninth candidate: He is five-term Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who happens to have 'M.D.' - physician - after his last name. Unlike his opponents, political chameleons who change their position on key issues almost weekly, Paul has held to his core principles and beliefs for decades.
He is the only candidate who voted against the 2002 so-called Iraq War Resolution by which a spineless Congress gave our president a shoot-from-the-hip military blank check and plunged our nation into a disastrous quagmire.
He unequivocally opposed the ongoing illegal alien invasion of the United States and the attack on its sovereignty.
He consistently opposed the now infamous NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), which continues to destroy America's economic strength. He also opposed a new threat to the U.S. called the North American Union, which would completely integrate the U.S. with Mexico and Canada and eliminate the borders between them.
He opposes bringing back our military draft.
He vehemently opposes any law, such as the so-called Patriot Act, which attempts to trash our Bill of Rights. He opposes federal government control over our public education system and would essentially abolish the current federal income tax code and replace it with a simplified tax system.
In short, Ron Paul is a principled man, one dedicated to obeying the letter of the supreme law of this land - the Constitution - and getting government off the backs of all Americans.

Reagan Revisited
Regarding 'For Pasco Republicans, Thompson Worth The Wait,' Tom Jackson, Sept. 16:
Our beloved country faces a most troubling and divisive time, where politics overrides even the most fundamental of American principles. These days are reminiscent to when our nation was in need of a savior, a god-fearing leader who would bring us all back onto our feet and re-instill a sense of pride and patriotism in each of us.
That man was Ronald Reagan.
Now, almost 30 years later, America needs a new savior, a patriot and a leader with the same moral convictions that make this nation the 'shining city upon a hill.' This man is Fred Dalton Thompson. His vision, charisma, character and optimism reflect that of Reagan.
I am a councilman in the city of Zephyrhills who was elected at the age of 18; I am now serving my second term. The current frontrunning candidates for the presidency in 2008 leave me disillusioned at best. Their motives are questionable on both sides of the aisle. They are running for the glory of the job, not for the honor being in the position to lead a nation of great people.
Fred Thompson will evoke what is best in the American spirit. He is the right man at the right time. Thompson has not longed for the presidency - the presidency has longed for him.
May God bless Thompson, and may God continue to bless America!

Textbook Example
I, a parent, just found out that at Pasco High School there are not enough textbooks to go around. Therefore, all students do not have a textbook in certain subjects, one they can take home, study and use to do homework.
How is a child supposed to do well in school, prepare for college and understand what they are taught if they do not have use of a textbook?
The football team has its own bus, with televisions, but my child cannot take a science book home to study. Where are our priorities for our children?

Community Livability
More sidewalks in Beacon Woods? Why not?
All Beacon Woods residents should take the county's offer of help and accept adding sidewalks on Clock Tower Parkway. The county and Wal-Mart are putting up the money to build them to accommodate not only Beacon Woods residents but all members of the public.
When the Wal-Mart Supercenter opens its doors at the beginning of next year, we are very sure this community will have more traffic, more people walking and more bicycle riders. Therefore, we will have to learn how to keep traffic moving without adding new lanes and figure out how to make our busy roadways safe for bike riders and walkers.
With people aging and facing mobility challenges, our community should look for ways to help residents get around safely. We should accomplish this with wide sidewalks, flowered medians, signs, flashing lights and more.
After all, walking and biking are forms of transportation. When residents walk out their doors, streets and sidewalks should be their options. Do we want to drive, walk or ride a bike safely?
Changing our streets, adding sidewalks and bike lanes are issues that touch on livability and community for everyone.

An Inspiration
Regarding 'He Could Be Top Young Scientist,' Sept. 17:
We are not at all surprised to read that 14-year-old Joshua Hammer, a Zephyrhills High School freshman, is among the top 40 finalists for 'America's Top Young Scientist.' We do not know this family, but from reading of Joshua's research project, we have no doubt he will be chosen grand prize winner.
This young man has a very bright future, and the world will be better off for it. Congratulations, Joshua! You are an inspiration to all of us.
