PLANT CITY - The boat ramp at Hillsborough County's Edward Medard Park, off Turkey Creek Road south of State Road 60, will be closed Oct. 22-25 for repairs and improvements to the parking lot.
The ramp, set to reopen Oct. 26, is on Medard Reservoir, once known as Pleasant Grove Reservoir, and includes 800 acres of man-made lake that the American Cyanamid phosphate company donated to the Southwest Florida Water Management District in the 1970s. The property was opened as a public park.
The temporary closure is part of a three-phase project to renovate the facility at the popular fishing spot. This part of the project includes paving and repairing the parking lot.
The parking area will be restriped to accommodate 49 tow vehicles and trailers, four spaces for the disabled and 12 spots for cars, among other improvements, at a cost of $89,000. The prime contractor is Commercial Interiors Inc.
The total ramp renovation project is joint-funded with a grant from the water management district, which also is known as Swiftmud.
The other phases include replacing the floating docks with aluminum docks and gangways and repairing the concrete boat ramps. The new docks are being fabricated and should be installed by park staff by the end of January.
The cost of the entire improvement project is expected to be $321,000.
