Twenty years ago, a group of civic leaders imagined a way to bring night life and culture to downtown Tampa by building a performing arts center on the banks of the Hillsborough River.

Two decades later, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is a shining jewel that has brought joy to some 10 million theater- and concert-goers, as well as those exploring lessons in the arts at the Patel Conservatory.

Now the smartly run center, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, has announced plans to grow its endowment from $30 million to $50 million, a move that should ensure future success while reducing its reliance on taxpayer support.

Already, some of its strongest patrons have stepped up to lead by example. You can too - those interested in supporting the endowment may call (813) 222-1071.

The three-year campaign got a jump-start from Frank and Carol Morsani, who are donating $2 million; Hinks and Elaine Shimberg, who are contributing $1 million; and Martin and Ruth Silbiger, who have pledged $1.25 million.

They hope their contributions will encourage others, including everyday citizens, to contribute.

Last year, donations of about $5.5 million allowed the center to book top-flight performances while keeping tickets moderately priced.

Recently, the center launched the national tour of 'My Fair Lady.' Next spring it plans a five-week engagement of the Broadway blockbuster 'Jersey Boys' and 51 performances of the acclaimed 'The Lion King.' In October, its 20th anniversary gala will feature Liza Minnelli.

Those who've invested so much must pinch themselves when they see the marquee light up with big-name shows.

People like the Morsanis, Shimbergs and Silbigers want to ensure the performing arts center plays on, long and loud.

They hope you'll join them.
