Doesn't Take A River

Regarding 'Cleanup Volunteers Get Pick Of The Litter,' Sept. 17:

In brief, community members got together under the name of Coastal and Waterways Cleanup Day to clean their own roadway. Although the cleanup that took place Sept. 15 was a wonderful gesture on the part of the community members of Wesley Chapel, the location for the cleanup was Wesley Chapel Loop and County Road 54 west. There isn't a coast or waterway there.

The Coastal and Waterways Cleanup was created by volunteers who wanted to help clean the areas around waterways and coastlines. A statement was made that more people would get involved if they didn't have to travel so far. Travel is necessary for most volunteers because we don't have the pleasure of living next door to the beach or a river.

Each year there are more people who visit coastlines and waterways in this area than live here; sad to say, many of them leave their trash. If everyone just stayed home to clean, that would defeat the purpose of this event.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics for Pasco County, there are more than 26 streams and rivers, and that doesn't include lakes and small puddles. I hope next year Wesley Chapel volunteers take the time and travel.

Other Folks' Trash

Regarding 'Learning At Landfill,' Sept. 19:

The dump proposed on 1,000 of east Pasco's few remaining rural acres will be importing garbage from outside our county, and there is nothing that prevents them from bringing it from outside the state.

I don't care how 'eco-friendly' this landfill purportedly will be. I don't want other people's garbage in my backyard, all so a big company can turn a profit.

At one informational meeting, I asked the engineer where the trash would come from. He said he couldn't discuss that, that they didn't have contracts yet. But you have to know there will be a lot of it for them to turn a profit. And there they sit, right next to the railroad tracks.

What does it take for us to declare our rights as citizens of this county? It's time to stand up for our rights.

Not A Sponge

Regarding 'Restricted Land Space,' Sept. 8:

I was glad to read that the city of Zephyrhills realizes the value of its airport and is taking steps to protect it from encroachment.

Your article may need clarification, however. It referenced 'the millions of dollars the city has invested in' the airport.

But if you'll look into the airport's financial records, I think you'll find that a huge percentage of the money spent on the airport over the years was federal and state dollars, not local funds.

It's important that the residents of Zephyrhills know that the airport certainly isn't a sponge for local funds.

Syndicate Column

I am currently working in Baghdad, Iraq. I was born and raised in Dade City.

I simply want to say that Imani Asukile's columns in the Pasco Tribune are most refreshing and thought-provoking.

I am not sure if he is syndicated. If not, with his skill and appeal, it is only a matter of time.

I can't wait for the next article.
