DADE CITY - Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating an early morning fatality in a single-car crash on U.S. 301 at Payne Road.
A man was driving his 1992 Oldsmobile sedan south on U.S. 301 in the outside lane about 2:10 a.m. and ran off the road and onto the west shoulder, according to a patrol report.
The car smashed into a utility pole and rolled over, tossing the man onto the bank of a retention pond, the report states. The car ended up in the pond on the west shoulder of the highway.
Troopers are trying to confirm the identity of the man and locate his family. They think he's in his 20s.
He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
