After spending the past 12 years as Iowa State's coach, University of South Florida first-year defensive line coach Dan McCarney has gotten maximum effort from USF's first line of defense.
"Coach McCarney has done a great job for us," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "Nothing he has done has surprised me. I wouldn't have tried to hire him if I didn't think he was a great coach."
DE George Selvie believes there are two sides to McCarney.
"He pushes us to the max and if we mess up he's going to get on us," Selvie said. "On the field he's a business man, but he's the nicest guy off the field."
NT Richard Clebert says fear is a great motivator when it comes to McCarney.
"We're so afraid to mess up, we go hard 100 percent," Clebert said.
DILE UPDATE: LT Marc Dile, who missed the second half against North Carolina with a neck stinger, practiced for the first time this week Tuesday and will play Friday, Leavitt said.
ODDS AND ENDS: USF officials are planning a "green out" for Friday's game and are encouraging all fans attending to wear green. … Sports Illustrated will have four photographers at the game.
