TAMPA - Microsoft's much-advertised "Halo 3" video game officially went on sale today, with many Bay area game stores opening at midnight to sell the futuristic shoot-'em-up game.
Local GameStop stores were swamped with buyers at midnight, said store district manager Tony Rhoades.
"We sold a ton, counting all 16 stores of ours in Tampa Bay; they each sold a ton," Rhoades said.
Exact sales figures weren't yet available, Rhoades said. Most of his stores closed at about 3 this morning and re-opened between 8 and 10 a.m. to sell the games.
Each store should have supplies in stock, he said. The regular edition sells for $60, with a "Limited" collector's edition costing $70. A "Legendary" edition that includes a "Halo 3" facemask costs $129.
"The Legendary edition will be a harder one to get a hold of because it was a special limited production, but they are out there," Rhoades said.
