Falcons CB Hall To Be Punished

Published: September 25, 2007

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - DeAngelo Hall faces 'substantial discipline' that may include a suspension following his meltdown on the field and on the sideline against Carolina.

Hall's loss of composure on the field helped lead to the Atlanta Falcons' third straight loss. His tirade on the sideline could cost him a fine or a suspension.

Hall, the Falcons' two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, drew three penalties for 67 yards on Carolina's game-tying drive in the third quarter of the Panthers' 27-20 win Sunday.

'I made a mistake. I promise you it won't happen again, no matter what,' Hall said Monday.

'It don't feel good to be the reason your team lost the game, whether it's giving up a touchdown pass or you get a stupid penalty. It all feels the same. ... Ultimately, I let the team down.'

The penalties hurt, but disciplinary actions being considered by Coach Bobby Petrino may be the result of Hall, enraged by the penalties, confronting the coach in an animated sideline tirade.

'We certainly don't like the actions that took place on the field and do not like the actions that happened on the sideline and that's something that we'll deal with,' Petrino said. 'There will be substantial discipline. It will be handled in-house.'

When asked if Hall could be suspended Sunday against Houston, Petrino said: 'We haven't come to any conclusions yet. We're keeping all our options open, but we certainly will do something.'

Petrino conferred with team leaders about Hall on Monday.

'I guess they're coming up with a plan, determining what they feel is the best thing to do,' Hall said.

'If it's a suspension or a fine, especially if it's a suspension, I take it in full stride.'

BILLS: Tight end Kevin Everett made more significant strides over the weekend in his recovery from a life-threatening spinal cord injury.

Everett lifted his right arm for the first time Sunday, a day after sitting up in bed for four hours, Teodoro Castillo, his attending physician, said Monday. He couldn't sit up for longer than 90 minutes before he was moved to Memorial Hermann Hospital from a Buffalo hospital on Friday.

BRONCOS: Sent safety John Lynch and quarterback Jay Cutler for MRI exams. Lynch has a strained groin and Cutler a sprained ankle.

Lynch left in the first quarter of Sunday's 23-14 loss to Jacksonville and didn't return, leading Coach Mike Shanahan to suggest the perennial Pro Bowl selection must really have been hurting.

Cutler sprained an ankle when he was sacked in the waning minutes by Reggie Hayward but stayed in the game for the rest of that series and the next one, which ended with him throwing an interception that sealed Denver's defeat.

CARDINALS: Matt Leinart still is Arizona's starting quarterback.

Kurt Warner will be still waiting in the wings as the team's 'no-huddle' specialist after nearly leading the team to a comeback victory at Baltimore.

'We're going to try to find ways to keep Kurt playing based on how he played yesterday,' Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday. 'But I don't feel like Matt has done anything to lose the job.'

49ERS: Tight end Vernon Davis probably will miss the 49ers' next two games with a sprained ligament in his right knee after getting hurt during San Francisco's 37-16 loss at Pittsburgh.

LIONS: Rookie receiver Calvin Johnson is unsure if a back injury will prevent him from playing Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

RAIDERS: Top pick JaMarcus Russell was added to the roster and starter Josh McCown's status was in doubt because of a sore foot.

Those factors have put third-stringer Andrew Walter in limbo. After starting the offseason as the only quarterback on the roster, Walter has watched as the Raiders traded for McCown, drafted Russell and signed Daunte Culpepper. Expecting to get a chance with a new team after Russell had to be added to the roster, Walter instead found out he would have to wait longer.

The Raiders released cornerback Duane Starks to make room for Russell, and will keep four quarterbacks for now.

RAMS: Running back Steven Jackson will miss at least one week with a partial tear of his left groin, an injury sustained in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-3 loss to the Bucs.

Rookie Brian Leonard, a second-round pick from Rutgers, will get his first start Sunday at Dallas. Coach Scott Linehan said Jackson would be week to week.

Linehan said Jackson, who had 115 yards on 30 carries, was hurt making a cut at Raymond James Stadium.

SEAHAWKS: Running back Shaun Alexander has a broken left wrist, but will continue to play with a protective cast. Alexander has been playing with the cast on his wrist since spraining it in the team's opening victory against the Bucs.

STEELERS: Wide receiver Hines Ward said an MRI exam on his bruised knee revealed no damage.

TEXANS: Defensive tackle Cedric Killings was able to stand in the hospital and doctors are confident he'll soon be walking. Killings' progress came one day after he left the field on a stretcher after a headfirst collision with Indianapolis receiver Roy Hall.

Killings fractured his C-4 vertebra and was unable to move any of his limbs for a time on the field Sunday. He has since gained movement in his arms and legs, though he's weak in both hands and his left arm.
