Injured McKenzie Back In Helmet At UM Practice

Published: September 27, 2007

CORAL GABLES Freshman wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie wore a helmet during practice for the first time at Thursday's practice.

McKenzie broke vertebrae in his neck in a car accident in July in a one-car accident with teammates Robert Marve and Colin McCarthy.

He is able to catch passes and participate in drills, but defenders are not allowed to be three feet from him.

"For him just to line up and have a helmet on his head is great for him," Coach Randy Shannon said. "It gives him confidence."

McKenzie wants to play this year, but Shannon is going to be cautious with his talented 6-foot-2, 170-pound freshman.

NOTES: WRs Sam Shields and Ryan Hill, who have been on the scout team all week, continue to be the hot topic as they are rumored to be suspended, but Shannon repeatedly has denied these rumors.

"No, they are not suspended," Shannon said. "Now, if they did not practice worth a crap, they won't play."
