Vick Has Positive Test For Marijuana

Published: September 27, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. - Michael Vick is now likely one misstep from jail.

The embattled Atlanta Falcons quarterback tested positive for marijuana earlier this month, a violation of the conditions of his release as he awaits sentencing in federal court on a dogfighting charge that already jeopardizes his freedom and his career.

Now, he has incurred the ire of the judge who could sentence him to up to five years in prison in the dogfighting case. On the day of Vick's guilty plea, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson warned that he wouldn't be amused by any additional trouble.

Hudson, who will sentence Vick on Dec. 10, on Wednesday ordered him confined to his Virginia home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. with electronic monitoring. He also must submit to random drug testing.

If Vick fails another drug test, he likely will wind up like co-defendant Quanis Phillips - jailed since his Aug. 17 plea hearing. Phillips failed a drug test when he had the electronic monitoring and random drug testing requirements.

Vick's positive urine sample was submitted Sept. 13, according to a document by a federal probation officer that was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

Because Vick violated the conditions of his release, Hudson could take that into consideration during sentencing, said Linda Malone, a criminal procedure expert and Marshall-Wythe Foundation professor of law at the College of William and Mary.

On Tuesday, Vick was indicted on state charges of beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and engaging in or promoting dogfighting.

Delhomme Sits Out Panthers' Practice

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme's strained right elbow forced him to miss practice, leaving his status uncertain for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Linebacker Dan Morgan (ankle) and guard Jeremy Bridges (toe) also sat out the workout.

Delhomme was injured when he was sacked by John Abraham late in the third quarter of Sunday's win against Atlanta. He played into the next series, when he winced in pain after throwing a short pass to Brad Hoover.

David Carr took over and led Carolina on two scoring drives to snap a tie. Carr, who was 3-for-4 for 56 yards, would start against the Bucs if Delhomme can't go.

An MRI on Monday showed no structural damage to Delhomme's elbow. But he did not dress for practice and left during the workout to get treatment.

BEARS: Named former Buc Brian Griese the starting quarterback over Rex Grossman.

BENGALS: Signed free-agent cornerback Blue Adams, who played for the Bucs in 2005-06, to a two-year contract, and waived fourth-year cornerback Keiwan Ratliff.

BILLS: The Bills have gone through so many players already - they placed backup offensive lineman Jason Whittle (hamstring) on injured reserve - that they ran out of space in their locker room. And that meant clearing out tight end Kevin Everett's locker - something Coach Dick Jauron said a week earlier would not happen.

BRONCOS: Star receiver Javon Walker skipped practice with swelling in his surgically repaired right knee.

BROWNS: Tight end Kellen Winslow didn't practice because of a partially dislocated left shoulder, an injury sustained during the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss in Oakland.

DOLPHINS: Linebacker Zach Thomas was back on the practice field on a 'limited' basis, but it's unknown if he'll play this weekend against Oakland.

FALCONS: Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall said he has been fined $100,000 by the team and may have to sit out one or two quarters of the next game for his meltdown Sunday against Carolina. Hall wasn't pleased with the decision and plans to appeal through the NFL Players Association.

RAIDERS: Josh McCown missed practice with a broken big toe on his left foot, meaning Daunte Culpepper probably will get the chance to start at quarterback Sunday.

VIKINGS: Tarvaris Jackson's groin injury limited him in practice, leaving Kelly Holcomb as the expected starter at quarterback again this week.
