GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Billy Nobles, left (with 'Reel Animals' partner Mike Anderson).
The fishing has been pretty good this week with schools of redfish all over the Bay. Just remember that fish of like size stay together. We all know to look for the schools of mullet when hunting for redfish but a 14-inch mullet and a 36-inch redfish are not pals. You want to look for the big 24-inch mullet to begin your search.
I took a client out last Friday on the hunt for an oversized snook. We found some in a pothole and got one to eat a four-inch whitebait about 10 feet from the boat. He made short work of the 30-pound leader with his razor-sharp gill plates. We wound up with a handful of decent-size snook, a few short grouper and a redfish or two.
The full moon this week seemed to make the reef fish, snapper and grouper a little tougher to catch, but they should be in full swing by the weekend. However, we are catching good numbers of snapper and grouper on our trips inside and outside of the Skyway. If these storms do get us and things continue the way they are heading we should start to experience our fall kingfish run in a few weeks.
Catch captains Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the 'Reel Animals Fishing Show' on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. on WFLA, Channel 8, and on Sundays from 8-10 a.m. on WHBO, 1470 AM. To book a charter, call 1-866-GAMEFISH or visit www.reelanimalsfishingshow.c
