GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mel Berman.
Drifting deeper flats just off the Dunedin Causeway this week during the bright harvest moon, captain Michael Plastic, his brother Jim and I caught and released numerous trout up to 22 inches. We also caught several juvenile gags, and Jim hooked a huge pompano working an Old Bayside Shadlyn 'Electric Chicken-'colored jig.
Pompano fishing has also been picking up at area bridges, especially at the Sunshine Skyway where anglers are catching them in good numbers up to 19 inches. Most are being caught using live shrimp and greenbacks as well as Doc's jigs.
Tom Morgan was on the water just before sunrise and began fishing near a spoil island north of the Dunedin Causeway. Using jigs and a MirrOdine, he caught two redfish right away. Then, working deeper water, he hooked several good-sized trout and some small grouper.
A short distance away, he noticed terrorized bait being pursued. He went over to check it out and found a school of hungry jacks.
'I had a ball catching several of them. Most were good-sized and frisky,' he said.
Moving to the flats fairly close to the islands, he drifted across, catching more nice trout and small grouper and two black sea bass.
'I had a lot of fun,' Morgan said. 'I caught eight species in one day and was back at the marina by 10:30 a.m.'
