TAMPA - Plant defeated Atlanta Woodward 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19 as the Panthers finished fifth in the 15th annual Berkeley Premier Volleyball tournament. The two-day tournament had five Tampa area volleyball teams competing in the 16-team tournament.
The Panthers outlasted Woodward in the fourth game, taking control with the score tied at 18 to end the game on a 7-1 run. The Panthers (13-1) got nine combined kills from its two outside hitters, sophomore Maddie Martin and junior Danielle Erb. Martin led the way for the Panthers in the match with 19 kills, while Erb had 18.
'They Erb and Martin were fantastic,' Panthers coach Leanna Taylor said. 'I was actually amazed at their performance, I have never seen them play so well.'
Plant finished second in its pool-play round as the Panthers lost their first match of the tournament Friday to Fort Myers Evangelical Christian.
Louisville (Ky.) Mercy Academy won the tournament for the third straight year, defeating Suwanee (Ga.) Northview.
'In Louisville there are usually three or four strong teams and then it drops off after that,' Garvey said. 'I love to bring my team down here to play against this level of talent.'
Mercy is ranked seventh in the nation according to the Century Club Top National 100. In the same poll, Plant is 20th. Seven other teams in this weekend's tournament are listed as bubble teams just outside the top 100.
Gainesville Buchholz topped Evangelical Christian for third. Among area schools, Tampa Prep finished 11th, Durant 12th, Berkeley Prep 13th and Holy Names 15th.
