Traveling With Sammy Davis (Not A Rat-Packer)

Published: September 30, 2007

TAMPA - The Bucs are off to a 2-1 start, partly due to the contagious energy from the home crowd at Raymond James Stadium.

However, things promise to be tougher today as players pack their Superman pajamas, teddy bears and binkys to play against Carolina on the road. The Panthers lead this series 8-5; Tampa Bay is 2-4 at home and 3-4 in Charlotte, N.C.

Staying with the travel theme, I spoke with Bucs cornerback Sammy Davis about his most memorable travel moments. And, yes, he gets a Sammy Davis Jr./Mr. Bojangles/one-eyed reference at least twice a day.

Anwar: What is the worst place you have traveled to?

Sammy: Commerce, Texas.

Anwar: What was there?

Sammy: Nothing ... My brother was actually going to school out there, and I went to visit him. There was nothing out there. It was scary.

Anwar: Have you ever traveled into a woman's restroom by accident?

Sammy: Yes, I have. I was walking into a restroom and not paying attention and I looked and realized 'I am in the wrong restroom.' I've done that before.

Anwar: Did you leave?

Sammy: Yes.

Anwar: Have you traveled on the road and roomed with a snorer?

Sammy: When I was in my rookie year playing for San Francisco, I was rooming with Kwame Lassiter and he snored. He was my roommate for the whole year.

Anwar: What did you do?

Sammy: I had to go to sleep before he did.

Anwar: What is one thing you can't travel without?

Sammy: My Bible.

Anwar: Have you ever been searched by airport security when traveling?

Sammy: Oh, yeah. It seems like every other time.

Anwar: Ever been in that air booth?

Sammy: I've been in that a few times, too. I hate that.

Anwar: Did you ever travel with a favorite toy as a kid?

Sammy: I used to travel with Curious George, the little stuffed animal. That was my favorite.

Anwar: When did you stop traveling with him? Last week?

Sammy: Laughing Maybe when I was 8? Probably younger than that. Maybe when I was 6.

Anwar: Ever traveled to a girl's house with a really bad gift?

Sammy: I don't think I ever brought a gift to a girl's house. I was always the gift. As long as I was coming, that was all that mattered.

Anwar: Have you ever traveled to a job and been fired?

Sammy: Nah.

Anwar: How is that possible?

Sammy: Playing in the NFL was my first job. That is the first job I've ever had.

Anwar: Haven't you been let go by a team before?

Sammy: Heck yeah.

Anwar: Then technically weren't you fired?

Sammy: You're right. I have been fired before.

Anwar: Have you ever traveled outside the country?

Sammy: No.

Anwar: Have you ever wanted to?

Sammy: Nah. I'm afraid of flying over water.

Anwar: What if you ever have to play a game overseas?

Sammy: If that happens, I guess I have to face that when it comes. Until then, no.

Anwar: If that happens, will you have Curious George in one hand and your Bible in the other?

Sammy: I might have to.
