Published: April 2, 2008

Know what you want before talking seriously with a salesperson...research, compare prices.

Negotiate total price...talking monthly figures could cost you more.

Remember when negotiating...on average there is a 1500 - 2000 dollar mark up on more expensive cars...10 to 11 percent of new cars.

If you're buying a used car...have it checked out by a trusted mechanic before buying it.
When buying a new car...carefully examine each cost listed and ask questions if you don't understand.

RECOMMENDED READINGS BEFORE BUYING A NEW CAR:
MAGAZINES:
Consumer Reports
Consumer Guide

BOOKS:
"HOW TO OUTSMART THE NEW CAR SALESMAN" - by Gary Carr
"HOW TO BUY A CAR" - by Daniel Cohen
"THE COMPLETE CAR COST GUIDE" - by The Intelligent Choice Information Company

POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN HAVING A CAR REPAIRED:
Ask for a written estimate...you deserve one if costs exceed $50.
The bill can't be more than 10% higher without your authorization.
Contact your State Attorney's Office or your State Consumer Service if it is.
Ask how long repairs are warranted. 6 months, six thousand miles is average.
Make sure you know what it will cost before any work is done.
Get a second opinion.
