Consumer Guide: Home Solicitation Sales

Published: April 2, 2008

DO always ask to see some identification.

DO always ask to see a county or city solicitor's permit (required in most cases!)

DO check out the seller and the business by calling your local Better Business Organization before buying.

DO get additional expert opinions or estimates when salesperson asserts that services are required.

DO be aware that in most door-to-door sales for more than $25 the buyer has the right to cancel within THREE BUSINESS DAYS (all calender days except for Sundays and holidays). The seller must also provide the buyer with notice of this in writing at the time of the sale. You should send the letter certified and keep a copy of it for proof that you have notified the company.

DO get a copy of anything you sign - you are entitled to it.

DO read the entire document you sign - your signature indicates that you have read and understand it all, even if you haven't read it all!

DO get all verbal agreements in writing

DON'T allow yourself to give in to the "hard sell" - take time to think it over, a legitimate business will respect that.

DON'T sign a contract that has blank spaces or one that doesn't have the business' name and address.
