TAMPA - Six teenage girls took turns punching and kicking Victoria Lindsay while others made a video recording of the beating, which went on for 30 minutes.
Two other teens kept watch outside, even knocking on the front door to tell the girls they were making too much noise and that neighbors were becoming curious, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Stephen Schumaker
While they were beating her, the girls taunted Lindsay, bragging that they were going to post video of the attack on YouTube and MySpace, according to an arrest report.
Deputies last week arrested eight teens accused of taking part in the March 30 beating, which left Lindsay with a concussion, damage to her left eye and ear and numerous bruises, the sheriff's office reported.
Stephen Thomas Schumaker, 18, of 6020 Calendar Court W. in Lakeland, was arrested on charges of false imprisonment and battery. He was one of the lookouts, according to his arrest report.
Schumaker was released after posting $5,000 bail, jail records show.
Schumaker could not be reached for comment Sunday night, but his father, Robert, said his son had no involvement in the beating.
Robert Schumaker said he talked to neighbors who told him his son was not at the house acting as a lookout.
"They didn't do anything," Robert Schumaker said of his son and another teenage boy, also arrested and accused of being a lookout. "I would like for the detectives to listen to the neighbors and clear my son's name."
The six girls accused of attacking Lindsay were arrested on the same false imprisonment and battery charges, both third-degree felonies. The teens, whose ages are unknown, were charged as juveniles and booked into the Polk County Juvenile Assessment Center.
Lindsay's father said the teens attacked her to make a video that might become popular on YouTube, the video-sharing Web site. But the mother of one of the girls arrested said Lindsay had provoked the other teens by threatening and insulting them on the MySpace social-networking Web site.
According to Schumaker's arrest report, here's what happened:
Lindsay showed up at a friend's house on Calendar Court, down the street from Schumaker's, where she had been staying while having problems with her parents. Her friend and another girl started yelling and threatening her. After walking into her room, Lindsay was confronted by another girl, who insulted and threatened her. The girl hit Lindsay in the face several times, then slammed her head into the wall, knocking her out.
Lindsay woke up on a couch surrounded by six girls, who took turns punching and kicking her. She tried to leave several times, but the girls held her down and blocked her from leaving.
The girls drove the victim to another house and let her get out of the car, but with the warning: "If you go to the police, the next beating will be worse."
Deputies recovered the video, which shows the beating and the teens blocking Lindsay's attempts to escape.
The sheriff's office is expected to release the video and a transcript early this week.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. Reporter Neil Johnson can be reached at (813) 259-7731 or njohnson@tampatrib.com.

What nice girls. Sure wish they were my daughters. What lovely women they are going to turn out to be. Why can't I be their friend, I want to be their friend.
Good job parents, you did an excellent job raising these brilliant timid little sweethearts. Amazing - they are going to go far in life.
Outrageous!!!
Remove Myspace and the like from the internet. All the adults on myspace enable myspace and whatever happens on that site. I am going on 50, and I cannot understand the need or reason for myspace.
Get rid of the website altogether, the adults that go on their don't need it, and it repeatedly gives teenagers the vehicle to hurt others, whether with words, video, or with that horrible RAP Crap (music).
Let's see what their punishments will be - probably 6 months probation in the care of the same parents who are not watching them in the 1st place. They will be able to get right back on the computer and laugh, joke tell everyone about what just happened.
These parents and teenagers should get citizen of the year awards.
Poor girl,
YUCK!!!

Well. This society of ours has given people permission to act this way. You will go to jail if you spank your child. Schools get in trouble for trying to discipline these hooligans. This is where "reasoning" and being a friend leads. Sorry folks, I got spanked and I never got involved in stuff like this. I was spanked, not abused. Thanks Mom and Dad. I can be proud of the person I grew to be. I am glad you punished me and taught me.

That these kids had no empathy for the victim is just another reason I am losing faith in humanity. If we can't learn to treat each other with respect, I fear our time on this earth will be limited. If these cruel kids are a sample of the future of the mankind, it's not a bright future at all.

It is this hip-hop, "gangsta", "in-the-hood", "thug". "pimpin'", "cap in your a__", generation that glorifies senseless actions and violence like this. The behaviors and values that MTV and its like glorify. This mentality meanders into the schools and our youth, where it is tolerated, if not promoted. We'll move into split households or even households that don't know the father(s). When there is an effective family, the public schools and their agenda essentially neuter the ability of the family to teach and enforce its values. We have allowed this to happen to ourselves by not standing up for what is right, and we all know what is right or wrong. Sometimes it's uncomortable and takes effort to do the right thing.

This happens ALL the time. Your teenage girls and boys are doing more than you think. Just go to utube and search for girl fights. I called one parent in Summerfield to tell him his nice preppy daughter had posted a fight video and he said "yeah, I know". (It's still on there) This was supposed to be an upper middle class, respectable family. I suggest you watch everything your kids do on the internet and their cell phones.

I am amazed at some the ignorant comments that I've read. The fact the you blame these type of situations on Myspace or rap is insane. The blame begins at home. Realize what type of children you have by actualy interacting w/ them. Based of an honest evaluation of your kids. Punish and reward them accordingly. there's no one solution that'll be good for all children. Learn your kids

This poor girl suffered a brutal beating and these teenagers and the look-outs all need to be delivered into hard time and not get off on probation. This is senseless, ignorant, and worthless pain and suffering, if the judicial system fails this girl...I will realize loud and clear from our local county government everything from this point on is a free for all and citizens will have to take the care of themselve because the people in charge are turning their heads on crime. Judges are caught on tape as DUI's and get off scott free, Cops kill young kids and get suspended without time, Jailers turn wheeler-chair persons on to the floor and last but not least parents are giving up...what role models these kids have to look up to nowadays!
SO PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING HERE (COURTS) BEFORE THIS WILL BECOME THE NEXT NEW THING TO GET AWAY WITH IN OUR SOCIETY.

minette - this has NOTHING TO DO WITH FLORIDA. How ignorant to state that claim, things like this or worse happen all over the united states. Give me an example of any city this does not happen in. Why would the state of Florida have anything to do with this incident. These are future thugs with no proper supervision or consequences for their past behaviors, that they thought this would be okay. How ridiculous, instead of blaming the parents who raised these little beasts or blaming the kids themselves, you blame Florida.
The thug life is getting more and more appealing to our young people. Somehow this choice has got to be looked at for what it is. Violence pure and simple - a go nowhere way to live.
Keep on producing, playing, selling, and enabling the rap crap thugish way of life and it is only going to get worse.

Myspace and utube allow these kids to post their horrible videos, so of course they are partly to blame. I understand that the fault begins at home, but without that vehicle they could not post their videos so that so many people (other kids) can view it and get newer ideas.
we didn't have that avenue as kids, and we weren't going around beating each other up, or shooting each other, at the age I am now (going on 50) I have never held a gun in my hand, and I would never have thought to beat up a girl friend.
Parents have to spend more time with their kids, find out what is going on in their lives. Give them guidance and most of all give them more love. Mothers have to put their kids ahead of whatever MAN is in their lives, fathers need to plug in. Quit sharing your drugs and alcohol with your kids - you are killing the rest of us with your parenting skills. Beasts, my dogs behave better than these girls...
what's next!!!

My heart goes out to Victoria Lindsay, the victim. I pray she will have a painless recovery and that God gives her strength to get through this horrible situation. I blame the parents mostly all of the teens involved. I'm shocked that not one out of the 8 involved had the morals to say in their head "this isn't right," and either try to stop it or walk away from it and get help. What a horrible horrible thing. I think it is a little silly to put blame on youtube and myspace. They really have nothing to do with it. Before those venues existed people were beating the tar out of people. When I was in high school I remember a copy of photo's being passed around of a girl being sexually assaulted, so should we blame Kodak? come on! The blame falls on the parents who don't teach their kids moral values, who don't enforce consequences, and who let their children think they are adults and capable of making decisions. What was Shumaker's roll? I guess I missed that some how.

Let me see if I have this straight:
This happened in Florida, so its Florida's fault. Even though there are countless examples of equally appalling behavior in ever state.
No, it is apparently the fault of Rap music and Gangsta's, even though there is nothing in the story about Rap, and Im personally aware that country music is very popular in Polk County, and everyone knows there was never any violence before Rap came along.
No, it is Polk County's fault because a story like this never happens in Hillsborough or Pinellas; unless it's Pinellas Park or Valrico.
I'm really confused because I thought that the 8 kids who were arrested had something to do with this. Maybe it was their fault. But no, it must have been their parents because all parents have complete control of their children at all times and teach them right from wrong and the kids who are taught that always behave. Maybe we should look into why the victim was there in the first place, because something clearly is not kosher. Maybe we can find a reason to blame her, because after all, what kind of kid could she be to hang out with these little thuggies in the first place. And how in the world do we fit this into the neat little race/ethnicity/ghetto/trailer trash boxes we usually deal in? My oh my, this one may take some thought. Just remember, it is very very important to find someone to blame besides the people who did it

INSTEAD OF WISE "A" COMMENTS AND DEROGATORY REMARKS ABOUT POLK COUNTY AND FLORIDA - START BEING PARENTS AND ROLL MODELS. THESE CHILDREN DID NOT JUST ALL OF THE SUDDEN TURN BAD. THERE IS MORE TO THIS THAN JUST THIS INCIDENT. WHY ARE THE POLK COUNTY JAILS SO CROWED? BECAUSE OF STUPID, IRRESPONSIBLE AND PREVENTABLE ACTS LIKE THIS. WE CAN NOT BE WITH OUR CHILDREN 24/7. HOWEVER, IF THEY ARE RAISED WITH CHRISTIAN MORALS, RESPECT OF YOUR FELLOW MAN AND GOOD OLD FASHIONED DISCIPLINE AND PARENTING, THEY WOULD NOT IN MOST CASES EVEN CONSIDER SUCH AN ACT. WE DON'T HAVE PARENTS ANY MORE - WE HAVE "PALS" AND "BUDDIES" IN MANY CASES. THESE TYPES OF INCIDENTS CAN BE LIMITED AND JUST MAYBE, WE CAN START TO SEE A REDUCTION IN OUR JAIL POPULATION. GOD HELP US.

As a 30 year veteran of the Hillsborough School System, I am not surprised whatsoever by this story. We are confronted by an unbelievable number of parents who have abdicated their roles. Our schools are flooded with kids who are unloved, unattended to, and never held accountable for anything they do. If the Polk juvenile justice system is anything like Hillsborough's, these girls will get what amounts to a slap on the wrist and will no doubt elevate the severity of their crimes. Let's hope the parents of the victim sue the parents of every other child involved for every cent they're worth.

Poor parenting... nothing more, nothing less. It's a total lack of respect. Teach them RESPECT. Teach them to respect adults. Teach them to respect each other. Teach them respect for property. Teach them to respect the environment. Disciipline them appropriately, when they are disrespectful... but most of all... you must do it by example! Sorry everyone but it is their own fault, not their parents, not the schools etc. Every person in their teens should know that this is not acceptable behavior whether they come from single parent homes, black or white.
The real problem is there are no deterants to this type of behavior today. They will get a slap on the wrist and the bleeding hearts will still feel sorry for them!

If they do go to jail, these girls will be treated to the same courtesy they showed their victim. The motivation for the attacks will not, however, be fame and infamy, but rather, personal satisfaction... and most likely, worse. Justice? yes, perhaps, but will they learn that hard lesson, or will they wonder why this is happening to them -- "Hell, it was just a Video!"

situp, it no one called it a racial issue, not one person. No one called it an issue of single parents either. Every person who indicated that is was bad parenting simply state that. "Bad parenting." It doesn't matter the make-up of a family, its the morals taught. When people teach their children morals and reinforce consequences, children learn and gain morals. This is not including the few bad seeds who are born sociopaths, or have reactive attachment disorder, or other unfortunate issues. But in general, when you give your child a basis of any topic such as morals, religious belief, family traditions, hygiene, etc, they usually tend to stick. So yes, the children at that age should definitely be able to make an informed decision because they should know beating someone injures them, however, if their parents did not instill values, it's not that they don't know any better, they were brought up not to care or understand the ramifications of their actions. So bottom line, it all comes down to bad parenting. Terrible parenting.

If I am not mistaken there was an incident just like this last year and for some reason I think it was up around Hernando, not sure. But the young lady did not get off light. Every one involved in this should be treated in the same way.
My parents spanked me (but did not abuse me), I spanked my children (but did not abuse them), and I believe you can spank children now as long as you do not beat them. The thing that I am questioning is why did they do it? There does not appear to be a reason given, and the girl was there because she was having problems at home. She tried to get away from them by going into her bedroom. Something is not being told. This is not a Florida, Polk County, parent issue. This is an issue that needs further investigation.

the problem is: would you trust SOME parents today to spank?
for it to work we'd have to start spanking parents because MANY parents today would use it as an excuse to vent their frustrations with the world and their life

The police department should handcuff each kid that beat her and let Lindsay have a half-hour to punch and kick to her heart's content. I just can't get over the fact that nobody takes responsibility for their own actions anymore. Just because someone calls you a name or gives you the finger is no reason or excuse to beat them senseless. A little of their own medicine is what they need. Otherwise, it will continue to escalate until it becomes murder. And God knows our jails are already over-full (probably with these kids' parents).

get a life people - no one needs myspace, go out and meet people in person and show them the REAL you, not some made up story that you create like some teenager.
YoungMoneyy92 - just because that girl ran her mouth as you so eloquently state - is NO reason to beat her up, for 30 minutes and catch it all on video. Little girls gone wild, instead of fighting, open up a book. Learn to read. Sounds like you are very immature to think this is okay.
How sad I am for you.

YOUNGMONKEY92: When you say that we need to correct our spelling and grammer, you need to go back and read your post.
When you say that you bet that only one girl did the beating, I have a question. Why does the report say it was all caught on video tape, and why did the law officers go after all of the young ladies, and one adult young man. They really are something to be proud of, and they subjected this young girl to over 30 minutes of torture. I do not care what someone says, words will not harm you. What they did in retaliation did hurt.

I hope that your language skills and the misbehavior of these children are not typical of Polk County, as some who have posted here seem to suggest. If it were so, it would have to be one of the most uncouth and uneducated places in the state. I'm sure you can do a better job of representing yourselves. Maybe you could start by capitalizing the first word of each sentence when you write something.

I (and many others that I know) don't have a myspace account to MEET people. I have a full time job (50+ hours a week) and a boyfriend. I have 28 friends on my myspace account, most of which are RELATIVES and FRIENDS that live in other states that I keep in touch with. Myspace does not make a person desperate, so stop generalizing. What a rude comment.
Actually, I feel sad for you, for being so close minded and hypocritical. You too obviously enjoy the internet, otherwise you wouldn't be on this tbo blog.

Yeah, it's just like parents blaming fast food places SUPERSIZING their meals for their childrens' obesity. Like they have a gun to your head to buy their products in large quantities. It's called ADVERTISING, people. Either you buy into it, or you don't. You DO have a choice.
Always gotta blame someone else, right?

Our humanity is dependent on a sense of right from wrong. These animals belong in a cage with others of the lower creatures. A zoo would be nice, but then they might scare the little ones.
A guess the Jail cage system with older tougher animals for company.

I am on this blog because I am catching up on the local news, working on the internet, and keeping in touch with family and friends thru email. Not myspace.
If you use myspace for that, wonderful, I know and have heard of many (MANY) adults who use it to meet people and I believe that is when the trouble begins, I mean look at the news - listen to all the myspace horrors. Watch to catch a predator, where do you think the pigs are finding our young people (they are not only in the schools). I think that if you are mature and use it correctly, I am all for it. But unfortunately, like we all know, it is used mostly for negative reasons. You cannot argue that fact. But once again, using myspace along with the bad parents is what the problem is. Under 18 should be watched at all times on the internet. Watch what they are posting, saying, writing, and who is writing, posting, and talking to them. Of course, like everything else in the world, the bad has made a venue look bad. I would not allow my child to use myspace. I am not closed minded, I am just real and I know what is happening to this world of internet. Myspace does not care who or what is posted, they are raking in their money from their sponsors and they do not care what happens to our children. That is obvious. After watching to catch a predator, if it were my website, I would do everything I could to make it safer and not allow those fight videos to be posted in the first place. But they do allow it, and the kids are posting them, they are fighting just to put it on myspace and utube. It is disgusting. when I was a teenager, I was worrying about what makeup to wear or what boy I had a crush on - not thinking up ways to beat someone up, I was not thinking about what violent act I could do next..
maybe some use it wisely - but the majority of the kids (teenagers) do not use it wisely, am I the only one that sees that....
Maybe me just wanting everyone safe is wrong, I don't know...

Youngmoney92, please feel free to leave your comments, however, DO NOT call people on their lack of grammar skills when you indeed are unable to use proper English yourself. Quoted from your post: "That girl Victoria (your victim) ran her mouth and then when she was confronted that's what happened. and I can bet that only ONE of them girls actually BEAT her. So calling all eight of these teens cold and bad and whatever else your pea brain can think of is not right by no means."
That my friend was very poor grammar and use of the English language. This is not a spelling bee or term paper and the posts are not graded, however, if you are going to sit up on your high horse and call people on grammar, you better be perfect when writing yourself. I see that you also said (you)"I bet" it was only one girl..... you are wrong. Read the article. The entire point is that it was video taped. They have all people and their involvement on tape. Good try.
I also love how you say you know all of them and they are not bad people....really? Good people don't hold someone hostage (which is what they did by having look-out detail) and then beat the tar out of them. I don't know what back a$$ part of the woods you were raised in, but normal people do not think that beating others is "good" behavior, nor is the behavior usually displayed by "good people." Crawl back into the hole you came out of and the world will be a safer place!

Tampagirl4ever, I see your point to an extent about MYspace and how kids are getting harmed from it. However, I do have to point out, if the parents were parenting, the kids would be monitored. I know several parents who have teens that use this, but they know their passwords and are able to and do access it all the time. They monitor it because they are good parents. I use MYspace as well. I have rekindled old friendships and found people I have lost touch that I thought I would never see or hear from again. It’s actually quite a neat website that when used correctly can be used for good things. My nephew went missing for over two years. We created a MYspace account on his behalf, and guess what, we found him, through the account. Several private detectives reached out to us and helped. In creating the account we found that many missing children have sites. I think it is a wonderful way to spread the word and the pictures. I’m not saying your opinion is wrong, I agree kids can get hurt when they are not monitored. I too watch that TV show “to catch a predator,” and it is heart breaking on so many levels. I think all of the people blogging including you and myself agree on the most important part, children should be monitored. Children need adults to teach them and protect them. That is the most important issue in this article, all of the kids involved including the victim needed their parents to be there for them and parent. (BTW, I wrote you a note on the Rome Ave. story, it was an apology. Hope you got it.)

What ever happened to kids playing candy land, mouse trap or cards? Oh I forgot, to many kids are being watched by respectable people wondering where are the parents? To many times the parents are low lifes that could care less and can't wait for them to turn 18 and have society take care of them. Everytime I read something "STUPID" like this, I think, well..... Welcome to tomorrows future folks. Like it or not, this is the generation that will eventually be helping/taking care of us. Of course after they serve time for being "STUPID" !!!

So while our legal system dishes out 20 year plus jail sentences for men who have consensual sex with young women under 18, we will see NOTHING happen to these brutal animals who assaulted and possibly injured her for life.
At the most, they will get probation and that too will be unenforced.

on this subject - well said. All I want is for parents to do their jobs and myspace would be a perfect venue for like you said finding old friends, etc.
I totally agree the monitoring starts IN THE HOME. Unfortunately, parents are not monitoring always. Your friends that do watch and access sound like great parents, hopefully their efforts will make their kids live long and healthy safe lives. Glad to hear you found your nephew. That is the stuff myspace should be used for. Not the preverts and the fight videos. We have so much ignorance in our world, people making such bad choices...I wish leave it to beaver era would come back, but that is not being realistic.
take care and keep on watching!!!

why are you people going back and forth about things that really don't matter and about things YOU WILL NEVER change and the people in these neighborhoods WILL NEVER change, they like living like thugs, they like living off the system, not just blacks, white people, hispanic (I am hispanic), all people all races, all colors, this thug issue has really taken off and it is ALL our faults for allowing it to continue in the first place, I am from and live in Polk County, I even include the name Polk County in my email address, I love Polk County BUT - fact is it is embarassing what it has become, all the crack mothers, crack heads, crack dealers, crack corners have ruined my lovely area...I am a 3rd generation from polk county, and I am sure my grandparents did not expect it to turn out this way when they were part of the original history of polk county, ybor city and the city of tampa.
these thugs keep getting slapped on the wrist for their crimes and they just get out and do the crimes over and over and over again....
They are not getting it, neither are the judges getting it..Keep them in prison/jail for longer periods of time and maybe just maybe they will learn...I believe if you commit one violent crime, that should be it for your freedom...build bigger jails, without air conditioning, make them learn something while they are serving time, teach them that how they were raised with violence and guns is not the way society wants them to be - it is disgusting what has happened to Polk county
I challenge all the thugs once again to eat their own guns,
I challenge the gun makers to STOP producing guns, and
I challenge the crack head mothers to STOP producing more and more thugs...

Parents and youngsters all need to be brought up on charges and the full extent of the law applied to them. Parents as accomplices and youngsters treated as adults. Additionally the victim should take all to civil court for monetary compensation. What a dysfunctional lot of human debris.

To me, this is attempted murder. The fact that she has permanent damage is a whole other reason to push for the highest possible punishment. These girls and the boys that stood watch should all go to adult prison where they should and would suffer extreme physical pain. I hope they do. I hope they suffer. If the judges don't start making an example out of these future murderers of America, that's exactly what they'll become. And if some of these pieces of garbage should die in prison, too bad. This crime is atrocious.

I know I'll take a beating for this ,no pun intended. Sentence the girls to the same thing they gave out . Probation will not change their attitudes , they'll laugh when they get a slap on the wrist. I know that this is not the proper punishment but neither is giving them probation . Try them as adults because they crossed the line from being children when they did this .

You may be correct, though I think that society (the courts) may kick these teens to somehwere else beside the curb. I will not be suprised if they are charged as adults and prison time is in their future. Lets just see how this ends.

Attempts to "justify" this kind of violence are just as inexcusable as the violence itself. Those arrested need to be charged as adults and their names be made public; they have forfeited any chance for leniency as juveniles.

I disagress with every person on this page. POLK COUNTY is an amazing place you just have to dig to find the good inside the drama. Im a single mother living in Polk County and I dont have issues with this town and my son seems to love it. Im sure you people commenting this site have better things to do beside nark on some teen age girls curttenly in Polk County Juvenile Assessment Center. There is always two sides to every story and these girls that are currenly behind bars have not got to tell their side of this now world wide known story. It is also wrong to blame the parents in this case. Some times teens do things they shouldn't and yes someday they will regret it but the parents are not at blame for the beating of another teenager. I would also like to defend Stephen Schumaker and Cades Nicoles, Stephen i have never met him but im sure he didnt have a part of some girls fighting he seems to be a pretty clean guy like his father stated above, But cades nicoles i know her personaly and this girl is rather amazing she has never turned her back on me or my child even when i felt the need to leave i stuck around for her, and if there is one thing i know about this girl is she would never jump some one she is a one fight kinda girl she doesnt play around with that gang jumping bull sh it. The charges should be droped on these young ladies and they should be released the one that should be held at charge is tory lindsay for starting something in someone elses house when told to leave. The drama is not even worth listening to, crap happends in polk county it happends every where its life the lies need to end and the real truth behind this story needs to come out. The teens charged and in jail should be released to give there side of the story to the news. Free the teenages..Let the truth come out..those they think are innocent that have not been charged are far from innocent..Tory is not an angel and if the other people involed in this have to be charged and get in trouple she should go down as well. Polk County is full of drama and it will fade as does the rest of the drama so dont lose faith or give up hope parents of those involed things will get better to those locked up keep your head up things will get better time is the only cure.

I know the story from the beginning so here it goes...Victim Lindsay and her sister started with the harrassment last year against one of the jailed girls leaving messages that they would cause serious bodily harm to her etc. school was involved, parents were involved. Lindsay's sister has a battery charge against her at this very moment! The girl accused of doing most of the beating is a 14 year old, the victim is 18...I would be embarressed myself to admit a 14 yr old kicked my butt! The victim works at winghouse didn't live with her parents until this came about (they are a loving family now to get money for everyone else) and she is 5 weeks pregnant! Yep, the victim is a role model c
