DUNDEE - Investigators have identified the man killed by a Dundee police officer in the parking lot of a grocery store late Thursday night, the Polk County Sheriff's Office reported.
Tyrone Hawkins
An autopsy is scheduled for today for Tyrone Hawkins, 31, of 218 Shepard Ave., Dundee.
The police department got a call about 11 p.m. saying a theft was in progress in front of the Winn-Dixie at U.S. 27 and Dundee Road, Police Chief Sammy Taylor said. Taylor did not give any details about the theft, other than to say it was something that had been in front of the store.
Officer Nicholas Burns and his supervisor, Cpl. Ralph Marshall, responded, and when the suspect tried to leave, Burns fired his weapon, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.
Burns, 22, has been with the Dundee Police Department about a year and a half, Rodgers said. Both Burns and Marshall have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The sheriff's office is conducting the death investigation. The state attorney's office will conduct the review of the officers' actions, Rodgers said.
