Home Sales Up In March
The Greater Tampa Association of Realtors reported that area homes sales rose in March to 1,162, a 43 percent increase from 833 reported in February. Home sales typically rise in March after a slower winter selling season.
Home sales, including single family homes and condominiums, are down 33 percent for the first three months of 2008, compared with the same period in 2007. The association said 2,766 sales were reported for the first three months of this year.
Super Bowl Sponsors Sign
The Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee said Thursday that The Tampa Tribune, WFLA-NewsChannel 8 and TBO.com" rel="nofollow">class="bold">TBO.com have signed on as official Host Committee sponsors for the 2009 game. The NBC network will televise the game and WFLA, an NBC affiliate, will broadcast the game locally.
John Schueler, president of the Florida Communications Group, which oversees operations of the newspaper, TV station and Web site for parent Media General, said: "This international event will offer untold opportunities for Tampa businesses as well as showcase this wonderful community, and we are happy to be a part of these important initiatives."
TBO.com has already collaborated with the host committee, which serves as a liaison between the NFL and local efforts to support and promote the event, to develop and host its official Web site, TampaBaySuperBowl.com.

Newspaper To Be Sold
The Daytona Beach News-Journal said it will be sold after it lost a legal battle with Cox Enterprises, a minority shareholder.
The timing of the sale and potential buyers are unknown, the paper said Thursday.

GM Issues Recall For Vibe
General Motors Corp. is recalling 122,593 Pontiac Vibe passenger cars in the United States to fix bolts in the power window system that can become loose and lead to the window shattering.
Rite Aid Posts Losses
Rite Aid Corp., the nation's third-biggest drugstore chain, lost $960.4 million in its fourth quarter, mostly the result of a non-cash income tax charge, as it worked to absorb more than 1,800 stores acquired last year.
Sharper Image Buy Eyed
Jerry Levin, the chairman of Sharper Image Corp., has resigned and says he wants to buy all or part of the bankrupt specialty retailer. His exit comes two months after the beleaguered San Francisco-based company named a new chief executive - its third in a year and a half - and filed for bankruptcy protection as it tries to survive a worsening sales slump.

Gas Prices Still Soaring
U.S. retail gas prices extended their record run Thursday. The national average price of a gallon of gas climbed 1.4 cents overnight to a record $3.357 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Prices for regular unleaded hit a record $3.350 in the Tampa Bay area.
