LAND O' LAKES - Land O' Lakes youth soccer coach Tony Goiran will be given the Liberty Mutual Responsible Coaching Award tonight. Goiran, a coach for the Central Pasco United Soccer Association, also will received a $500 grant.
To win the award, a coach must be nominated. Goiran is one of 88 youth soccer and football coaches honored by Liberty Mutual. He's also one of two Florida coaches to receive the award. Youth football coach Ronald Nerf of Boca Raton is the other.
According to the Responsible Sports Web site: "This campaign celebrates the countless acts of responsibility shown by people in their everyday lives and encourages all people to take personal ownership in ensuring positive outcomes in life. The overarching goal of the Responsible Sports program is to ensure that our kids experience the best that sports have to offer in environments that promote and display responsibility in action.
Liberty Mutual is proud to support the men and women who every day volunteer their time to coach youth sports. We recognize that these coaches are an integral part of the fabric of our communities, instilling in our children the lessons learned from sports both on and off the field."
ANOTHER WEATHERFORD STARTER? Former Land O' Lakes and current Central Florida redshirt freshman QB Joe Weatherford made a case for himself during last weekend's spring game. Weather led the UCF squad, comprised mostly of first-team players, to a 16-7 victory.
Weatherford came in after starter Mike Greco left with a hip pointer after being sacked early in the game and completed seven of 15 passes for 148 yards, a 32-yard touchdown to Rocky Ross and an interception. The scoring pass came at the 2:34 mark of the first quarter. Weatherford also completed a 43-yard pass to Kama Aiken to the 1-yard line, setting up a plunge by RB Ronnie Weaver. Before leaving the game, Greco completed each of his two passes for 14 yards.
Weatherford is the younger brother of Florida State starting QB Drew Weatherford, also a Land O' Lakes alum.
LOCAL RACES TO SECOND: Dade City's Tim Ferry finished second in the 20-lap, 450 Supercross portion of the AMA Supercross at Detroit's Ford Field behind Davi Millsaps of Cairo, Ga. The race was the 14th of 17 tour stops. Ferry's runner-up finish was his best of the season. He stands in sixth place in 450 Supercross series points with 189. Chad Reed leads the pack with 296.
