TAMPA - Bayshore Christian's baseball team locked up the second playoff berth in program history Monday when the Faith Warriors outlasted Carrollwood Day School 4-3 in eight innings in a Class 1A-District 10 semifinal at Doc Nance Field.
Bayshore Christian's Caleb Stenholm came through with the heroics in the eighth. Stenholm's RBI single with one out in the inning broke a 2-2 game, and with two outs he stole third and scored on a throwing error for what proved to be the difference.
CDS loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and cut the deficit to one on Matt Montieih's RBI groundout. However, the Patriots left the tying run 90 feet away, as right-hander Tyler Linabury induced a game-ending groundout off the bat of Darius Bing.
Both teams got solid efforts from their starting pitchers. CDS right-hander Collin Kruse limited Bayshore Christian to two unearned runs on six hits and struck out six in seven innings. Linabury was even more impressive, yielding eight hits while striking out 10 in a complete game.
The Faith Warriors, whose only other playoff berth came in 2006, will play for the district title Thursday. They face the winner of today's game between Cambridge Christian and Tampa Bay Christian.
