Nielsen Shedding 100 Jobs In Oldsmar

Published: April 24, 2008

TAMPA - The Nielsen Co.'s operation in Oldsmar will shrink staffing by about 100 as the company lays off workers and shifts others to outside contractors on site.

The cuts come as the TV and Internet ratings giant moves through a long-running project to trim costs. That process started in 2006 when Nielsen announced plans to cut 10 percent of its work force worldwide, including about 110 in its Oldsmar research and technical center.

More recently, Nielsen cut 67 jobs from its internal technical support division, and outsourced 50 workers to TATA Consultancy Services, an Indian-owned global services company, according to Nielsen spokesman Gary Holmes.

Overall, Nielsen's work force has still grown, Holmes said.

In 2001, it employed 1,200 people in the area. After staffing cuts this spring, the company will still employ 1,500 at the Oldsmar center. The company still qualifies for tax incentives from the city of Oldsmar and Pinellas County for creating jobs, he said.

Whether Nielsen continues cutting or outsourcing jobs is undetermined. Holmes said the company is still in a process of evaluating each job to see how Nielsen can operate more efficiently.
