TAMPA - Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain will make what his campaign calls a major policy speech on health care at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa on Tuesday.
McCain will come to Tampa for two fundraisers and the health care speech as the second day of a tour of Florida. He'll have fundraising events and a discussion on health care with doctors and patients at a Miami hospital Monday.
That night, McCain will attend a fundraiser in Tampa sponsored by Gov. Charlie Crist, his top political ally in Florida.
Tuesday, he'll deliver the speech and then attend a fundraising lunch at an airport area hotel.
None of the events is open to the public. The audience for the speech will consist of members of Moffitt staff, physicians and researchers.
Former U.S. Sen. Connie Mack, a Moffitt board member, is expected to attend.
McCain campaign spokesman Jeff Sadosky said this will be McCain's first substantial presentation on health care since the primary, fleshing out positions he sketched during the primary campaign.
He said the speech will touch on the cost of health insurance, "which Sen. McCain feels is the root issue for the health care crisis as a whole"; on including preventive care in the approach to dealing with the crisis and on smoking cessation, obesity, diabetes and other issues.
McCain will continue his health care emphasis with a visit to a "paperless hospital," which uses digital recordkeeping, in Allentown, Pa., on Wednesday.
The visit will be McCain's first public appearance in the Tampa Bay area since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee.
