ORLANDO - SeaWorld officials are still trying to determine the cause of a midair collision during a dolphin interaction Saturday that killed one of the animals.
The dolphins were performing jumps in Discovery Cove when the collision occurred, spokeswoman Becca Bides said this morning.
"Unfortunately, one of the animals was injured and has died," she said. "The second animal appears fine and is under veterinary supervision."
The dolphins were in the center of the pool, over deep water and about 50 feet from the onlookers.
"This is an unfortunate, random incident," she said. "While it is not unusual to have two animals performing aerial behaviors at the same time, we are reviewing the situation to ensure even such a random incident does not occur again."
The dolphin that was killed, Sharky, was 30 years old.

Vatoloco, why was it wrong for thebeachwego to add that her daughter would be affected, this is an opinion forum. My sister would have been traumatized as well. All incidents like this are very sad in many ways, including observers.
This is very sad. It never even crossed my mind that something like that could happen. I'm sure the other dolphins are affected by this, they are intuitive and know somethings wrong. The trainers must be devastated. I'm sure it was traumatizing for the viewers as well. What a tragedy all around.

Im wondering how ...ohboy... has come to the conclusion this is animal cruelty? All mammals love to be applauded for a job well done, including humans. These animals are much safer in this environment. Humans are killed on a daily basis in their natural habitat. Those behind bars, are not. This was a peculiar accident. I am sure that the trainers are very upset these animals are like their children and they will find out how to make it safer for these animals in the future..

Yes, it is sad, but animals also have accidents, not just humans. However, I doubt this would have happened in a larger arena such as the ocean. Let these animals go into the wild. We should amuse ourselves with jousts and such like the old days. Wait...we do seem to be amused by people killing each other and harming each other. That is ALL that we hear in the news anymore.

Heaven is kind of like the mall - only guide dogs allowed. Quote me the passage where animals get to go, if you don't mind.
Hearing about this event is very sad. But these animals are treated well despite being kept out of the ocean. The animals are well-fed, kept in CLEAN water, and loved by the trainers. I think they have a good life and no one expected an incident like this. Without zoos and parks like this, people wouldn't learn as much about animals, and probably wouldn't have half as much respect for them.

A couple of things I registered just so I could post.
1) I actually met Sharky (AKA Natasha) while I was at discovery cove in January. She was very nice and she towed me through the water for a ways. She was always the highest jumper in the group. If she ever wasn't, she would stick her nose up in the air to get a few more inches and beat everyone out. It was pretty funny.
2) Dolphins in captivity were BORN in captivity. These dolphins are at least 2nd or 3rd generation, as its been illegal to take dolphins out of the wild since the 70s.
3) These dolphins are incredibly well cared for. I can say this because I got the backstage tour and I saw exactly how they are treated and cared for. This was definitely a freak accident.
4) It would be illegal to release these dolphins back into the ocean. They were born (not bred...they don't force coupling) in captivity and don't have natural behaviors. If they were released into the ocean they wouldn't know how to hunt. They might fall in with some other dolphins and influence THEIR behaviors, which could inhibit those dolphins' survival.
5) The whole thing is recorded on video by Discovery Cove. They sell DVDs to guests for about 100 bucks. I kind of doubt this will be included, though.
6) Not sure about this time...but when I was there I didn't see any little kids in the dolphin tank. This place is very expensive, and you have to tread water for a while during the dolphin interaction...not the kind of thing you take your kids to.

If there was a god wouldn't it be better if he stopped the tragic event rather than trying to pick up the pieces after he let it happen. If there is a God he has a heck of a sense of humor.

They would much rather have them watch Barney and Dora. Hey...didn't Barney die one T.V. in front of millions of kids too? Plus, I think is wrong that people capture these animals and make them turn flips like that anyway...they should be in the ocean where the good Lord put them. There are also chairs on the beach area next to the lagoon so people could have been watching from there.

Hello Pepsi girl, great, but in order to differntiate the Mammal dolphin from the fish dolphin, shouldn't we ad a descriptive adjective to each one, so there wouldn't be any confusion? Fresh Dolphin Sandwiches and Entrees, are a mainstay on many menues in the keys. Been hanging out around there off and on since 1960. Been a fisherman around the world for not quite 65 years, dolphins have always been eating fish, (with a few accepted exceptions), and porpoise have always been the intelligent mammals, who are capable of doing extremely marvelous things!!! I am a veteran, European and Korean. Fished the Atlantic, fished the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, the 10,000 Islands, Magun Bay, the Caribbean, Kinzua Dam, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Monongahela, the Allegheny, the Youghagheny. I listen to you, with interest, because obviously, my years are catching up with me. I'm writing to much, I lived in the Everglades for over 8 years, in the swamps. Probably years before you were ever born. So , keep the letters coming. I could tell you soo many adventures.

It was the s-word with the two blanky-di-blanks that got me filtered out. TBO has their filters set on sensitive...
Anyway
THANK you DarkMarja,
I can't tell you how over I am the "prayers for the loved ones and family" as though the friends and family read this and care to be bothered by something this personal from total strangers.
If one really reads any of the latest articles wherein someone died and the media/journalist tried to get a hold of a family member, the typical responds as of late has been 'no comment' or a spokesperson of some sort indicates to the rest of the world that the family wishes to be left alone.
So they surely don't need the prayers and blessings.
Mind you, it's offending to have that stuff crammed down one's throat. Especially if one has different believes. Religion is personal.
Ok, now to the issue at hand. As mentioned in a previous post, these animals couldn't survive in the wild, because they never learned their natural behavior on how to survive.
Therefore, to even suggest something like releasing them is absolutely unrealistic.
Animals die (I know, that might come as a shocker to some) in and out of captivity. Except in the wild, they probably don't last as long due to illnesses, injuries, etc.
I'll state the obvious. It was accident. S--t happens. This would be the prime opportunity to explain to little Susie and Johnny the realities of life.
If they can't deal with it? Then don't have children. What's scarier is that obviously the adults can't deal with their responsibility of parenthood wherein some of those very uncomfortable and depressing conversation just have to take place sometimes.
Nobody ever said being a parent was easy.

I wonder why they would name a dolphin Sharkey, were they just trying to be funny?
I think everyone should show a little respect for Sharkey and ask yourselves what would Jebus do?

Too bad he didn't fly into the audience and take about 50 jean short clad tourists home to Jesus with him. You are all in my prayers.

It is not so amazing at how many sick, twisted, sarcastic, insensitive people there are in this world, just look at this forum, do any of you have any feelings or care about anything at all. Or do you have nothing else better to do with your life than to make fun of living animals.

I really want to make a comment about dolphin safe tuna, but nothing seems to come to mind right now. I need sleep, no more Bones marathons during the work week.

You know, I think the word missing here is compassion. Compassion for all living things. It's not whether these intelligent animals should be wild or captive or whose fault it was or who saw it. It's about caring about our fellow human beings and the things that live on the earth with us.
No wonder this world is in such great distress. Who can care about a nation full of starving children when you can't even care about one lovely animal?
The people that care for these creatures in captivity are not just trainers. They are care-givers, friends, a part of each others lives. Not only did the dolpin pod family this creature belonged to lose a member but so did the care-givers.
Get up off your hard hearts and start caring about others instead of wasting all your efforts making sarcastic remarks about events like this. I suppose those of you who are not moved by this story are also the ones that think it's OK when women, children and the elderly are abused and tormented.

My Jesus is going to take me a lot further in helping to better the world than your Jebus. What the heck stupid crackhead came up with that one.
That explains it I guess. You have fins in your wallet instead of dollars. Must be another one of those freaks that lives behind a computer screen because you lack the self discipline to do anything else.

4tickles...would your Jesus condone you speaking to others like that. Christians don't condemn others...they leave that to God.

Oh 4Tickles, you'ld know who Jebus was if you read all the comments from the beginning. If YOUR Jesus was on top of things, ol' Sharkey there would still be performing instead of now being chum. Speakin' of chum, thanks to Sharkey, may he/she RIP, I now have a friend in Jebus ! PS...sorry you didn't get the fin joke. Maybe as you suggest I should be disciplined behind a computer screen. Threewhiff and 4Tickles....hmmmm......a match made for Dolphin Cove ??!!

4Tickles, I highly doubt that "the world is in such great distress" because of the TBO posters that have a sense of humor. And yes, we do "think it's OK when women, children and the elderly are abused and tormented." We actually encourage it, especially when it involves those who come on here trying to be all holy......Enjoy your day.....Very Sincerely.....GF
