TAMPA - Hillsborough County commissioners set a preliminary property tax rate of 10.8110 mills this week for residents living in unincorporated areas.
The current millage is 10.8147, so the new rate represents a slight decrease.
To figure out your county tax payment for this year, take your home's assessed value and subtract $50,000 for homestead exemption. Divide that total by 1,000, and then multiply by 10.811.
For instance, the owner of a house in an unincorporated area with an assessed value of $200,000 and a $50,000 homestead exemption would pay $1,621.65 in county taxes.
However, that figure only covers the county commission portion of your property tax bill. All county residents pay assessments levied by the county school board, the Children's Board, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Tampa Port Authority. Residents of some neighborhoods also pay small independent tax district millages.
The school board millage is the second highest assessment after the county commission's.
Residents of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City will pay 5.8523 mills in county taxes but will pay additional millage levied by those cities. Tampa residents will also pay a county library millage of 0.5583 mills.
All the city and agency preliminary millages are due into the county property appraiser by 3 p.m. Monday.
