CLEARWATER - Two fishermen were rescued this morning in Clearwater Harbor after their canoe capsized during a thunderstorm, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Kevin Baird, 46, and his brother, Boake Baird, 48, both of 1641 Santa Barbara Drive, Dunedin, were rescued by the sheriff's marine enforcement unit about one mile east of Caladesi Island, Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
They were fishing in a 16-foot Gheenoe, a brand of motorized canoe, when it began filling up with water during the thunderstorm, Bordner said. They tried to reach a nearby spoil island, but the vessel capsized in 8 feet of water about 11:30 a.m.
Both men were wearing personal flotation devices, and one of them was able to call for help on his cell phone, Bordner said.
Deputy James Clynes Jr. of the sheriff's marine found them and pulled them aboard his patrol boat, Bordner said. Neither man complained of any injuries.
The Gheenoe was towed to Dunedin Causeway Boulevard.
