Magnet Schools Expand Options In Hillsborough District

Parents looking for intense programs suited to specific interests have many options in the Hillsborough County School District.

One avenue is magnet schools.

Magnets receive federal funding to offer specialized or advanced curricula. They were created to promote voluntary desegregation, but magnet schools serve students from a larger area, some countywide.

Demand is large for magnets, and most have waiting lists. Students must apply for a specific program. Here is the list of programs available in the district and what schools host them:

Advanced Course Scholars — Dowdell, Ferrell and Sligh middle schools; Lennard and Leto high schools

Animal Science — Cahoon Elementary

Architecture Academy — Tampa Bay Technical High

Center for Language Exploration and Global Communications — Ferrell Middle

Cultural Arts & Humanities — Rampello K-8

Engineering — Middleton High

Environmental Studies — Muller Elementary, Dowdell Middle

Foreign Language & Global Studies — Lockhart Elementary

Gifted & Talent Development Academy Program — Cahoon, Dunbar, Lee, Lockhart, Lomax elementary schools

Heath Professions — Sligh Middle, Tampa Bay Technical High

International Studies — Lincoln and MacFarlane elementary schools; Williams Middle; Jefferson High

International Baccalaureate — Hillsborough, King and Robinson high schools

Law Studies — Franklin Middle

Math / Science / Technology — Dunbar and Lomax elementary schools, Stewart and Young middle schools; Middleton High

Urban Teaching — Blake, Hillsborough and Middleton high schools

Visual / Performing / Communication Arts — Lockhart, Muller and Philip Shore elementary schools, Orange Grove and Progress Village Middle

World Studies — Lee Elementary
