SAN DIEGO - San Diego Padres shortstop Khalil Greene has a broken left hand and could miss the rest of the season, Manager Bud Black said Thursday.
After fouling a ball off his shin and then striking out in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night, Greene hit something in the tunnel between the dugout and clubhouse with his left hand, Black said.
"He was in a lot of pain down in the tunnel," Black said. "I think it was frustration with getting hit and frustration just in general with his last few at-bats."
Greene is expected to be out six to eight weeks, which could mean his season is done.
SUSPENSIONS: Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera and New York's Edwar Ramirez were suspended and fined by the league for intentionally throwing at batters during a series between the teams earlier this week.
Cabrera was suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a pitch at Alex Rodriguez's head in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night.
Ramirez, a reliever, was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing at Kevin Millar's head during the top of the seventh inning Wednesday.
TIGERS: Reliever Todd Jones was placed on the 15-day disabled list as Detroit eagerly waited for Kyle Farnsworth.
Jones has inflammation in his right shoulder. He has been bothered by pain for six weeks but refused to blame it for his recent struggles.
