TAMPA - Ten years behind the wheel of a school bus has given Lawson Lee an appreciation for the sacrifices and commitment it takes to do the job.
That's why he formed an honor guard to pay tribute to drivers and their assistants when they die.
"We need to honor the people who have carried our kids," Lee said.
Volunteers gathered at the county's transportation department Friday to practice their paces as units form to attend funeral services.
Fashioned after military color guards, six-member units will pay tribute to bus drivers and assistants at their funeral services. They will march in a military style to put flags in place near the casket. The group will act as pallbearers if needed.
Lee said forming the guard brings pride, morale and unity to the school district's bus drivers. Any member of the district's transportation department willing to commit for at least one year is invited to volunteer.
Sheryl Kegler said her family was thankful when the guard participated in a recent ceremony for her brother.
"The support of your fellow co-workers is so important," she said.
"It shows they really do love you and you're not just a number."
