NEW PORT RICHEY - A 37-year-old Port Richey woman was charged Friday with child abuse, drug possession and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit after she left two children in a car outside a grocery store.
New Port Richey Police said Lisa Ann Rost of 6814 Sandra Drive, Port Richey, was sitting in the front passenger seat and the children were in the back seat of a vehicle parked in a fire lane of the Sweetbay grocery store at 6542 Massachusetts Ave. shortly before 6:30 p.m.
The officer approached Rost, whom he said he observed lighting what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette. He also smelled a strong odor like marijuana, according to reports. Rost had slurred speech and constricted pupils and tried to hide the cigarette, reports said. The officer grabbed the cigarette and conducted a field test, which showed it was marijuana.
Rost later told investigators she intended to smoke marijuana with the children in the car, according to reports. She was supposed to be watching the children, whose ages were not available, while their mother shopped in the store. A subsequent search showed Rost was carrying in her purse a metal pipe used to smoke marijuana along with methadone pills, a metal vial with seven oxycodone pills for which she had no prescription and a butterfly knife.
The children were released to their mother.
Rost was being held today at the Land O' Lakes Jail with bail set at $15,650.
