A 50-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by a car while making a left turn in Polk County Saturday afternoon.
The impact left Gerald Pitts of Winter Haven pinned underneath another car that also was turning left from Polk County Road 655 onto State Road 540 about 3:45 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Pitts, riding a 2007 Honda motorcycle, was turning left when James Hill ran a red light and struck Pitts, the highway patrol said. Hill, 61, of Winter Haven continued heading east on SR 540, then returned to the scene, troopers said.
He left before police arrived, but witnesses were able to get a partial tag number. Police found him about an hour later in a parking lot in Eagle Lake having repairs made to his truck's left front tire, the highway patrol said.
Hill was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries.
