ST. PETERSBURG - The son of a marine biologist discovered something floating in the canal at the back of the family home Sunday, and his father believes it's a lung, St. Petersburg police said.
David Unger saw the object floating near the family's dock at 1237 Brightwaters Blvd. N.E. about noon and told his father, Timothy Unger, who police say is a marine biologist, St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Tonia Nave said.
Police were summoned, and the object was fished out of the water and placed in a plastic bag, Nave said.
The elder Unger could not say whether the lung belonged to a human or animal, Nave said.
The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office took the object into custody to determine what it is, Nave said.
