A man who says his routine is to sit in his garage in the early morning and read the newspaper got into a confrontation with a stranger at 4:45 a.m. today that ended with the stranger going to the hospital with a gunshot wound, Clearwater police say.
Lester Rollins Sr., 58, was in his garage at 902 Pennsylvania Ave. when a man walked up to him, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, a spokeswoman for Clearwater's public safety departments.
Alexander Stephen, 21, of Clearwater, first just asked for a light for his cigar, Daly-Watts said. According to Rollins, Stephen then poked him in the chest and made threats, Daly-Watts said. Fearing for his safety, Rollins shot Stephen and called 911, she said.
Stephen was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he underwent emergency surgery and is in guarded condition, Daly-Watts said.
No charges have been filed.
