CLEARWATER - Detectives have referred to the Pinellas County State Attorney's Office animal cruelty charges against a woman accused of abandoning two puppies in a parking lot, Clearwater police said.
Mary Ann Mahoney, 24, of Clearwater is accused of leaving two mixed-breed collie puppies in a parking lot at 1384 Pierce St. on June 29. Police say it appears Mahoney accidentally ran over a female puppy while leaving the lot, but did not stop to check on the animal. A male puppy was not hurt.
A child found the puppies and called police. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took custody of both dogs. The male puppy that survived, dubbed "Lucky" by SPCA employees, was adopted by one of the police officers that rescued it, SPCA spokeswoman Marissa Segundo said.
