SAN ANTONIO - A Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputy was injured in a single-vehicle crash this afternoon.
Deputy Jeffrey E. Tanner, 47, of Land O' Lakes, was on his way to work about 4:24 p.m. driving westbound on St. Joe Road near Matt Barthle Road when his sheriff's office cruiser began to "yaw," a Florida Highway Patrol report states. The 2007 Impala rotated clockwise, went off the road and hit a utility pole. The left side of the car then hit a large metal garbage container. The car rolled onto its right side and struck a barbed-wire fence, the report stated. The vehicle finally stopped on the north shoulder of the road on its right side and was facing northeast.
Neighbors reported power outages because of damage to the utility pole.
Tanner complained of neck and back injuries, sheriff's office spokesman Doug Tobin said in a news release. He was taken by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. The highway patrol described his injuries as "serious."
The highway patrol is investigating.
