CLEARWATER - A 17-year-old was shot early this morning as he tried to run away from two masked men trying to rob him and another teen, Clearwater police say.
The teen was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with non-life-threatening injuries, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
About 12:30 a.m., the teen and an 18-year-old were walking on Engman Street, just east of Holt Avenue, when a white sport utility vehicle pulled up, Daly-Watts said. Two armed men with bandanas over their faces got out and ordered the pair to the ground, Daly-Watts said.
The thieves took cash from the 18-year-old, but the other victim tried to run away and was shot, she said.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Clearwater police tip line at (727) 562-4422.
