ORLANDO - State prosecutors have filed formal charges against the 22-year-old mother of a missing central Florida girl, but not in the disappearance.
Casey Anthony was charged Tuesday with child neglect, a third-degree felony, and filing a false statement, which is a misdemeanor. Police have held her on $500,000 bail on those same charges since last month.
The prosecution's documents did not release any further details in the disappearance of 2-year-old Caylee. They declined further comment when reached by phone to avoid publicity that could lead the trial to be moved elsewhere.
Police say the mother lied to them and didn't report her daughter missing for more than a month.
Her attorney has denied the charges and says the mother believes Caylee is still alive.
