GAINESVILLE With Percy Harvin not doing much more than playing cheerleader on the sidelines, another key offensive contributor was noticeably missing from Wednesday's workout. Tight end Cornelius Ingram was nowhere to be seen at the Gators' third practice of the new season.
According to Coach Urban Meyer, Ingram was expected to have an MRI Wednesday night. The results likely won't be known until this morning at the earliest. In the meantime, Florida is calling the injury a left leg strain.
DEFENSE IS CONFIDENT: Despite giving up nearly 257 passing yards per game last season, the Gators defense is confident entering the new season.
Sophomore Dustin Doe attributes a lot of the unit's struggles to the growing pains suffered by a young group. Those experiences have turned the pangs of pain into a sense of confidence.
"We've become more accountable," he said. "If a guy shoots through the A-gap he knows the guy beside him has his back. I think because of our experience we'll be able to make more plays."
Meyer was less than pleased with the effort of the defense Wednesday, though.
"It used to be when people talked about the Gators it was relentless effort to the football," Meyer said. "That comes from leaders that come from the Ray McDonalds and the common theme is that those are older players that have had leadership value. Right now we're looking for some leaders but we're a young team."
WILLIAMS COMING ALONG: A torn left ACL derailed what many believed would be a breakout season for Mon Williams.
Now, nearly a year and a half later, the redshirt sophomore is prepared to throw his name into the fray for playing time at the suddenly deep Gators running back rotation.
Williams says he has regained much of his strength following his injury, but has yet to recapture the explosiveness that he was noted for.
"I'm very close," Williams said of the timetable for his recovery. "The doctor said it will probably be two more weeks."
ALSO: Running back Chris Rainey has a strained groin and will miss practice for the next couple of days.
