LAND O' LAKES - Saint Leo University announced the hiring of Evan Ortiz as its new sports information director Tuesday.
Ortiz, who comes to Saint Leo after 21/2 years as the Eckerd College SID, replaces Eddie Kenny, who is now the Bishop McLaughlin athletic director. Kenny held the position of assistant athletic director for external operations/sports information with the Lions since 2006 before moving on to Bishop McLaughlin.
"I am looking forward to returning to a place that has always held a special place in my heart," Ortiz said. "I am grateful to Director of Athletics Francis Reidy for giving me this opportunity and, I am looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones as we improve the experience of the student-athletes at Saint Leo.
"I have some very big shoes to fill with what Eddie Kenny and, before him, Walt Riddle, have established at Saint Leo. They set a high standard I hope to meet in my time as a Lion. I also want to thank everyone at Eckerd College for a wonderful two and a half years."
Ortiz, a Tampa native, played two seasons of baseball for the Lions and collected his B.A. in business management and administration in 2004 from Saint Leo. Before his time at Saint Leo, Ortiz played two seasons at Florida College in Temple Terrace.
"We are excited to have one of our own re-join the staff," Reidy said. "Evan's talents and enthusiasm for his job is a perfect match for our department.
"Evan will allow us to continue our on-line broadcasts and hopefully take us into streaming video and other areas, as we expand our information output."
