Taylor Adds Gold Medal To His Accomplishments
Newsome High senior swimmer Jason Taylor won a gold medal Monday in the 800 meter freestyle at the 2008 Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships in Minneapolis.
Taylor, swimming for the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center, took first in 8:07.77, nearly a second faster than runner-up Tyler Sell, who turned in a time of 8:08.69 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
It is the latest accomplishment for Taylor, a Class 2A state champion in the 100-meter butterfly last season who this summer also qualified for and swam at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
The national swim meet ends Friday.
BASEBALL: Robinson has hired Juan Fontela as its new baseball coach, Knights athletic director Marcia Monk announced Wednesday.
Fontela, who turns 31 in August, replaces Brandon Genovesi, who was terminated from the position in April after an alleged physical confrontation with a student while serving as a substitute teacher at Robinson High. It is the first head coaching position for Fontela, who last year was an assistant at Jefferson after previous assistant coaching stints at Alonso and Leto.
"It's exciting," Fontela said. "It's something I always wanted. Playing baseball throughout the years and now having opportunity to be a head coach and run my own program, I'm just thrilled and looking forward to it."
FOOTBALL: Vanderbilt redshirt freshman running back Jermaine Doster, a former Robinson High standout, has been suspended for the 2008 season due to violating team rules, according to a release from Vanderbilt's athletic department.
Commodores coach Bobby Johnson announced the decision after practice Aug. 1. The rules violations stemmed from Doster's arrest July 18 in Tampa on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and resisting arrest without violence.
