ARLINGTON, Texas - Joba Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday by the New York Yankees with rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder.

The club said Chamberlain will rest for about a week before beginning a throwing program.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he had no specifics to report regarding Chamberlain's examination by noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews in Alabama. Chamberlain was sent to see Andrews after having an MRI on his ailing right shoulder Tuesday.

The 22-year-old right-hander was removed from Monday night's start against Texas in the fifth inning with stiffness in his shoulder.

Chamberlain was moved from the bullpen to the rotation this season. He is 4-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 32 games, including 12 starts.

His injury is the latest blow to New York's depleted pitching staff. The team is already without No. 1 starter Chien-Ming Wang and right-hander Phil Hughes.

Ian Kennedy is expected to be called up from the minors to start Friday, when the Yankees continue their 10-game road trip at the Los Angeles Angels. Dan Giese will start Saturday.

ATHLETICS: Karl Kuehl, a baseball scout, coach, author and player development specialist known for his contributions to the Athletics teams that won three pennants, died Wednesday. He was 70.

Kuehl died of pulmonary fibrosis in a Scottsdale hospital. He was the manager of the Montreal Expos in 1976, going 43-85 before being fired with two months left in the season.

He spent 12 years as head of player development and later assistant to the GM for the A's.

Players that came out of the A's farm system in those years included Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire and Miguel Tejada.

CARDINALS: After the bullpen's latest struggles, St. Louis has decided to go to a closer by committee.

Closer Jason Isringhausen, who has a 1-5 record, 6.28 ERA and seven blown saves in 19 chances, remained a member of the bullpen although the role was not clear.

Despite the bullpen woes, the Cardinals were a half game behind the Brewers in the NL wild-card standings entering Wednesday's games.

Hard-throwing right-hander Chris Perez was recalled from Triple-A Memphis and outfielder Nick Stavinoha was sent back to the minors, a move that Manager Tony La Russa said had been in the works before Isringhausen allowed three runs in the ninth inning of the Cardinals' 6-4, 11-inning victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday.

RANGERS: The team's new closer is old-timer Eddie Guardado, still getting hitters out at the age of 37.

Guardado, who has been the Rangers' most consistent setup man this season, takes over for C.J. Wilson, who was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with bone spurs in his left elbow.

Wilson had an MRI exam earlier in the day and will fly to Los Angeles on Thursday to be examined by Lewis Yocum, who performed Wilson's elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2004.

Guardado entered Wednesday night's game against the Yankees perfect in three save chances this season and with 186 saves for his career. He hasn't allowed a run in 23 of his previous 25 outings to lower his ERA from 4.03 to 3.02.

ROCKIES: Colorado got a pair of pitching reinforcements Wednesday, claiming Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and activating Jeff Francis from the disabled list.

Hernandez, a former World Series MVP and two-time All-Star, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 starts before the Twins designated him for assignment Friday to make roster room for Francisco Liriano.

Hernandez, a 33-year-old right-hander, spent his previous 13 seasons in the NL with Florida (1996-99), San Francisco (1999-02), Montreal/Washington (2003-06) and Arizona (2006-07).
