TAMPA - A city report says brick walls at the former Gary Adult High School are unstable and in danger of falling but adds that steps can be taken to shore up the historical building.
However, a follow-up investigation is needed from a closer perspective, according to the report released today.
Owner John Simon would not grant access to the property, which is surrounded by a 6-foot chain-link fence, the report says. The inspection was done from the sidewalk on three sides of the property and from atop a fire rescue truck's ladder.
Much of the 95-year-old landmark's roof and west wall collapsed July 22. No injuries were reported.
Simon said he has not seen the report but denies keeping inspectors off the property, 3610 E. 10th Ave.
"I just asked them to sign a release," said Simon, who bought the building last year and wants to use at least three of the walls in the design for a sports center.
City code enforcement cited Simon for several infractions prior to the building's collapse. He pleaded not guilty and a hearing is set for Aug. 27.
